Nighttime Economy Strategy
Northampton, Northamptonshire
We worked with the Office of Northamptonshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner to deliver Night Time Economy Review, audit and Strategy Solutions in 5 different stages. The 1st of these stages saw us deliver our Policing the Night Time Economy and Women Safety Training remotely to police officers across the region. During the 2nd stage, we delivered a range of remote and face-to-face sessions for the Business Improvement District and developed best practice policies for venues to ensure that they are operating at the same high standards when dealing with vulnerability. These were also shared with the policing teams so that they, too, know what standards venues should be operating to. Alongside the development of policies, we supported the BID, in working with venues to identify opportunities to diversify their offering to ensure that they are providing a balanced offer that attracts a diverse audience that is not focused solely on alcohol and late-night trading. Stage 3 included the following stakeholder engagement: A consumer e-survey A variety of consumer and wider community focus groups Stakeholder phone call interviews Three Stakeholder workshop Stage 4 included two overnight audits conducted in Northampton and Kettering to assess the safety of women at night and make recommendations for improvement. Finally, during stage 5, we produced a report based on all of our findings. Within this report, key actions for all partners were generated, including a Women’s Safety Charter and implementation strategy for stakeholders and businesses.

Nighttime Economy Strategy
Newark and Sherwood
We worked in partnership with Newark and Sherwood District Council (NSDC) to provide specialist advice and guidance to develop an Evening and Nighttime Economy Strategy for the district. Newark and Sherwood is an important area in the economy of Nottinghamshire. The district comprises of characterful market towns with high streets full of independent retailers, food and beverage providers, and unique heritage assets that connect with a wealth of English history. Newark is the largest town in the District and has an urban area that is home to 43,000 people. Working with NSDC we want to enable local residents and businesses to flourish and fulfil their potential, as well as encourage more visitors to enjoy all that towns in Newark and Sherwood has to offer. However, Covid-19 has had a detrimental impact on the economy and specifically the evening economy of the district, with hospitality, accommodation, attractions, and services being particularly affected. Local nighttime attractions were also hit hard by lockdowns, with the nightlife only reopening in July 2021 and a possibility of new restrictions being reintroduced in the future. This exacerbated the already difficult national situation which saw 44% of nightclubs shut between 2005 and 2015, and 25% of pubs closed from 2001 to 2016. In response to this, we will be working with NSDC and stakeholders to trial new ideas and pioneer fresh approaches; we believe that the development of an Evening and Night Time Economy Strategy will help reopen the local economy, revitalise local high streets and enable our towns to respond to the medium – long term effects of the pandemic. This new strategy will research and review the current state of the local evening and night time economy. It will then inform on SMART short-, medium- and long-term actions which will help establish a vibrant, inclusive, and safe evening and night time economy. This strategic plan will support people and high street businesses in the process of safely reopening the evening economy of the district, ensuring that the area can adapt and reverse the medium- and long-term impacts of Covid-19. The strategy will focus on the four main urban and economic centres of the district: Newark, Southwell, Ollerton and Edwinstowe. It will cater towards the specialities of each area, researching strategies that will result in greater footfall, dwell time, increased visits, improved safety, increased cultural and event-based activities and increased visitor spend during the evening and night time.
